Pay Grade:                     $15.00/hour

 

Primary Purpose:

 

A Driver Trainee is responsible for participating in the Southside ISD behind the wheel training program to include skills performance and observation to obtain the skills and techniques necessary to successfully pass the Texas Department of Public Safety skills tests required to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements. Qualifications:

The Driver Trainee position is subject to the following limitations:

 

  • Trainee must complete training and be prepared for skills test within 90 business days from first training session.
  • Trainee will be permitted a maximum of two (2) attempts to successfully pass each of the three required skills tests: Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control, and Road Test.
  • Skills testing will be conducted either by the Texas Department of Public Safety or by Southside ISD through the Texas Department of Public Safety Third Party Skills Testing program.
  • Must have satisfactory outcome of fingerprinting background. Non-refundable fee (approximately $50.00) paid by candidate

Required:

 

Must be 21 years of age

Ability to pass alcohol and drug test

Ability to complete required bus driver safety training

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions

Ability to communicate effectively

Knowledge of student discipline procedure

Ability to manage student behavior

Ability to operate bus

Acceptable driving record as verified by the Texas Department of Public Safety annually

 

Experience:

 

2 years Valid Drivers License

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

General

Vehicle Operation

 

  1. Follow assigned route and adhere to established schedules.
  2. Assist with upkeep of bus cleanliness and fueling.
  3. Assist with recording mileage, fuel consumption, etc..

 

Student Management

 

  1. Supervise students while they board and leave the bus and cross the street..
  2. Maintain discipline; report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator.
  3. Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.

 

Safety

 

  1. Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
  2. Assist with bus inspection for safe operation of vehicle.

 

Other

 

  1. Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
  2. Work irregular hours as needed.
  3. Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.

None.

Maintain emotional control. Continual sitting, reaching, and repetitive hand and arm motions. Work outside and inside; moderate exposure to extreme temperature (hot) and vehicle fumes
